Urogynecology & Reconstructive Surgery Division, OBGYN Department

Medical Assistant III assisting Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and Nurses in the care and treatment of patients within Urogynecology & Reconstructive Surgery Division at Howard University. Responsibilities include maintaining examination rooms, medical/surgical supplies and equipment, and serving as a liaison to advocate and promote high quality of care for women with pelvic floor disorders. This role has no supervisory authority.

Experience & Key Responsibilities

Patient Preparation & Triage: Prepare patients for medical appointments by obtaining and recording vital signs. Observe patients and promptly report adverse reactions to medication or treatment to medical personnel.

Clinical Assistance: Assist Physicians with examinations and a variety of medical/surgical procedures. Perform wound care, including cleaning, dressing, and removing sutures as requested by a provider.

UROGYN Specialized Procedures:
Perform Voiding Trials, Foley catheter care, and straight catheterization.
Assist in removing, cleaning, and replacing pessaries; manage inventory and order pessaries.
Setup and assist with Cystoscopy procedures, ensuring a clean and sterile environment.
Assist with Urodynamics and manage handling of US probes.
Setup, assist, and order Botox.

Lab & Diagnostics Coordination: Collect urine samples and conduct urinalysis on every patient; collect other samples taken by the physician for testing and deliver them to the laboratory. Follow up on lab results and imaging, assisting the Physician with test results.

Administrative & Records Management: Prepare patient charts for upcoming appointments by obtaining copies of relevant requested labs and imaging studies. Retrieve dictations, lab reports, imaging copies, and correspondence; file and maintain orderly records.

Patient Education & Scheduling: Provide patient education and instructions as directed, including instructing patients in preparation for procedures and in-home care. Work with the front desk or surgical scheduler to schedule patients for follow-up testing procedures. Teach patients self-catheters, how to complete a voiding diary, and assist in bladder installations.

Facility Management: Prepare and clean instruments and equipment for use; clean, disinfect, and sterilize materials, instruments, rooms, and supplies. Conduct inventory and request depleted supplies.

Core Competencies & Skills
Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures
Preferred: Spanish language skills and willingness to obtain certification in medical interpretation
Medical Terminology and knowledge of CPT and ICD-9/10 code reference books
Skill in maintaining records and recording test results
Demonstrated skill in oral and written communications
Ability to follow established priorities and procedures, delivering quality customer service
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public
Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions


Education & Certifications (Minimum Requirements)
Associate’s degree in Medical Technology, Nursing or related field, OR a minimum of three (3) years related experience in a physician’s office, clinic and/or hospital.
Certified Medical Assistant.
